Middle School Girls Building

The first BLAST (Building Leadership Around Science and Technology) session was a great success. A dozen middle school girls completed their first simple circuit to light up an LED light in the classroom. Students learned to distinguish a ground wire from a power wire and how to find meeting point of these two wires on an Arduino micro controller circuit board. The Arduino board is the most common and most popular board in the Do it Yourself (DIY) electronics community; and our TDSP girls made it "shine" by using it to power an LED light. More importantly, we demystified the process by touching, moving, and even breaking, the lights. The success felt when the light shines and a girl knows, "I did that," is an inspiring sight. In the coming weeks, we will make traffic lights and learns lots about programming. Stay tuned for more terrific, and remember, always have a BLAST.
